John Lyly was an English writer, playwright, courtier and parliamentarian. He achieved success with his books Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (1578) and its sequel Euphues and His England (1580), and wrote eight plays, at least six performed before Queen Elizabeth I. His literary style, euphuism, was influential, and some scholars credit him with writing the first English novel and being the father of English comedy
