Charter granted 16 July 1879. the Senate of the Grand Duchy of Finland declared a city on 16 April 1878 and the islands of Kotkansaari and Hovinsaari were separated from Kimi in 1879. The first coat of arms was confirmed in 1881, replaced in 1954 and redesigned in 1957. The bridge of Kotka burnt down on 26 July 1855. The Second All‑Russian Conference of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party was held in Kotka on 21, 23 July 1907. Historically Swedish was the official language until 1902, then the city was bilingual until 1906. today about 1 % of the population are Swedish‑speaking
